Elk Grove Township Fire Department

Harper College, Department of Fire Science Technology, has joined forces with the Elk Grove Township Fire Department Training Academy to deliver "FIS-109" Basic Firefighter Certification.  This 12 credit course provides both instruction and certification as a state recognized Firefighter "BOF" Basic  Operations Firefighter II, satisfying the didactic and manipulative requirements for the Illinois Office of State Fire Marshall.  The Fire Academy will be limited to 15​ students each semester.


Because this course is a competitive limited enrollment program and is intended for 2nd year FIS students, the following application requirements will be used for entry level in the Fire Academy.


This course will be held twice a year with the next academy will begin Tuesday, August 19th.

Certifications that will be obtained with this course are as follows:

  • Basic Operations Firefighter

  • Hazardous Materials Operations

  • Technical Rescue Awareness

  • Courage to Be Safe

  • Fire Service Vehicle Operator

  • A​​merican Heart Association CPR and AED course

  • ​National Incident Management System 100 and 700
